Anti-Racist Vegan Activism
April 10, 2008
It’s time for a big, long post about anti-racist vegan activism. But first, a reading list:
- Vegans of Color, particularly this post: Colonial mentality in US-based activists? Say it ain’t so!
- Sistah Vegan, particularly: Unresolved Trauma from Experiencing Racism (and not experiencing it): Challenges to AR and Race and Ethnicity in Vegan and Animal Rights Analysis… is it really a feeble matter?
- The Power of Privilege
- Deep & Shallow Vegetarianism
- Racism and the Animal Rights Movement
- Feminist and Antiracist Arguments for Veg*nism
- You Can’t Be a Revolutionary and Eat The White Man’s Food
- And from my blog:Politics of Power and PeTA, A Compassionate Consumer is Still a Consumer
- Also from my blog, semi-related, intersectionality of feminism, anti-racism, veganism: Because They Can, Because the Anti-AR Feminists Just Don’t Get It, On Veganism And Privilege
Commentary to follow in another post. But first, what do YOU think?

Got something to say?

Thanks for posting the links. I’m interested to read your longer post when it comes along.
By the way, I’ve noticed the spelling of “veg*nism” in several places and never thought to ask about it until now. What’s the significance of the asterisk?
Good question.
Vegetarian = a person who does not consume animal flesh. They eat eggs, dairy, and might wear leather or fur.
Vegan = someone who seeks to exclude all use of animals . The don’t eat meat, dairy, eggs. They don’t wear leather or fur. They don’t go to zoos or circuses. They don’t use products tested on animals.
Veg*n = The inclusive term that refers to all vegans and vegetarians.
Veg is often used the same way. But “veg” is more descriptive of things, like restaurants or cities. “Veg-friendly” is a common way to describe a place vegans will feel relatively comfortable.
