5 Best New York City Websites
June 30, 2007 | Leave a Comment
…according to Elaine Vigneault.
- The Village Voice offers news and fun.
- Super Vegan’s NYC restaurant guide is completely searchable and shows the map location of each restaurant. You can search “vegan” “vegetarian” or “veggie-friendly” to find a variety of restaurants to suit you or your vegetarian friends. You can also narrow it down further by searching for wifi, price, or type of cuisine.
- Apartment Therapy has tons of good ideas and advice for making a small Manhattan apartment/ condo/ coop work for you and your family. Alas, they don’t offer a full feed so I don’t read them as often as some other blogs.
- UrbanHound has some lively discussions and is a great resource for basic dog related information in the NYC area. The site offers stuff for Chicago and San Fransisco, too.
- HopStop figures out your subway route for you. It’s like MapQuest for public transportation (MapQuest is just driving or walking directions). The site is REALLY a great idea, but it’s not always up to date, so double check your route.
This post was inspired by the meme I discussed at 2k bloggers. (Check out the commenters from that blog post: David and Judith and Old Cat Man.)

Hypochondria & Other Ailments
- My right hand is swollen and itchy. It kept me up half the night with the insane itch. Probably just contact dermatitis since I’m allergic to everything and have been around so many allergens lately. Going to take some Benadryl and get some anti-itch cream for it. Will report back later, possibly with disgusting photos of swollen hand. But… if it should turn into some crazy deadly thing and I die, I leave this blog to the world as part of the public domain.
- I forgot to feature an adoptable pet this week for the homeless pet series. Please make your way over to the Best Friends website or PetFinder to look at adorable adoptable pets.
I Love Coffee

I really am addicted. I love a good cup of coffee.
Maybe some day in the future I’ll give it up, but not now, not yet.
By the way, this blog is PG-13. Makes sense. I’m PG-13 :)
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Angel Canyon Part 7: The Wild Animals

We worked with dogs again today. Mom brushed the dogs while I went around their runs with a pooper scooper. Then I walked a bunch of dogs, including Sheba here.
My mom joined me on one walk, the most eventful. We were walking three dogs. I had Liam, my mom had Izzy, and a third dog was allowed to walk with us off leash. We’d jut come around the last bend in the trail, the highest point of the walk, when we heard a rattling noise. Lo and behold, a rattlesnake, just a few feet off the path. Luckily the dogs listened to us when we said, “leave it” and “let’s go” so no one was injured, neither us nor the snake. When we got back to the the kennels, we told the caretaker and she radioed someone, who showed up minutes later to re-habitat the snake to a more remote location.
I snapped a photo:
So far the wild animals we’ve seen in the canyon are these: hummingbirds, rabbits, turkeys, squirrels, and a rattlesnake. Other people have said they’ve seen: porcupines, coyotes, and cougars.
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Angel Canyon Part 6: The Bunnies
June 28, 2007 | 1 Comment
Today I volunteered with the bunnies and guinea pigs (aka “cavies”) at Best Friends. First I cleaned cages and corrals. Then I played with the bunnies and gave them some treats.
Here are two cute guineas:
I love guinea pigs. They make such great little pets. They are extremely affectionate if they’ve been treated well. And they make adorable little noises.
I’ve only ever had one as a pet. It was abandoned in the mail room at my apartment building. I rescued it and fell in love with guinea pigs. (If you want one, get one from your local animal shelter, not the pet store.)
Here are some of the bunnies at the Bunny House at Best Friends. Below: Blue on the left has one blue eye. The other bun is a tripod, but still gets around just fine. (Sorry, I forgot his name.)
Playing with bunnies:
And the best picture:
Would you believe bunnies are difficult to photograph? It’s the constant nose twitching… makes for blurry photos. Gotta use a fast shutter speed for these guys.
